Using art as a tool for communication and cultural awareness, Color The Camps began the first ever international art exchange with refugee children in Jordan and students in the United States.
The Denver Center for International Studies (DCIS) is a multicultural, multilingual Denver public school that promotes intercultural learning. Jerash refugee camp is located one hour away from Amman and is one of the poorest refugee camps in Jordan. Together, they asked children ages 7-12 to draw their own self portraits and images that represent their lives. They were then photographed holding their artwork. The resulting images were displayed with the help of children in the refugee camp and Denver school. Children from both countries were able to see each other’s work and caught a glimpse of the artist. The artwork from Denver is displayed on a wall outside of the youth center inside the camp. The artwork from Jordan is displayed in DCIS Elementary at Fairmont.
